When I went zero waste, I thought I would have to give up makeup and that made me sad …. So, naturally it was one of the last parts of my personal care regime to be traded in for a waste-free option. Lucky me, there are many brands offering refillable, ethical and toxic-free makeup. Refillable makeup or plastic free cosmetics are becoming more popular (probably by consumer demand), so now there are some good options.
First of all, if you have not visited Wellness Mama’s website, you should. She makes her own makeup and always looks so fresh. If you would like to make your own, I recommend her recipes.
Second, if you’re not up for the mess of making your own but don’t want to support big beauty businesses, then consider buying makeup made by hand by the many sellers on Etsy.com. I have gotten some really good makeup there.
I do purchase makeup from different sources, too. Here are my favorite zero waste and chemical free makeup brands.
Antonym Cosmetics—Not all of their makeup is zero waste, but lots of it is packed in bamboo containers, and all of it is cruelty free and vegan.
Elate Cosmetics—This is my personal favorite: not only are they toxin free, cruelty free, vegan and packed in bamboo containers, but they also offer refills.
Glow Organic—This brand is natural and uses organic ingredients. They also use recycled, recyclable and biodegradable materials for their packaging and displays.
You also need to take care of your face and skin. Necessary for that are makeup remover, a face mask and a moisturizer. Here are my recipes:
Makeup Remover—Forget old-fashioned bottled makeup remover and wipes; instead, say hello to super easy DIY makeup remover. First, you can try the old trick of a wash cloth with water and some bulk soap. If that does not work, you can use homemade makeup removal pads.
Ingredients:
- 1 4-ounce jar
- small cloth wipes (I use cloth wipes I cut from an old t-shirts or towels)
- 1 1/2 – 2 Tablespoons of Fractionated Coconut Oil (like this)
- 1 teaspoon of castile soap
- Distilled Water
- 2-4 Drops of essential oils (Optional — Lavender, Frankincense and chamomile are great essential oils to use on your skin)
Instructions:
- Place pads in the glass jar.
- In a small bowl, mix the fractionated coconut oil and castile soap.
- Pour mixture over cotton pads.
- Press down on the pads so the soap and coconut oil evenly absorb into them.
- Pour distilled water over pads, just enough to wet the pads.
- Place the lid on the jar and shake (this helps to evenly distribute the liquid over the pads).
Face Mask and Moisturizer:
Moisturizer—Coconut oil is a wonderful, light, natural moisturizer. Be sure to use organic, unrefined and fair-trade products in glass jars so you can reuse/refill them.
