Spring Blossoms: Seasonal Harmony

By Dawna Matthews

spring blossomHints of spring are sprouting up here and there at my house. Just yesterday, I saw shoots of the tulip and daffodil bulbs I planted in November peeking through the dirt. At the start of the new year we planted seeds for the spring, resolutions and preparations for new flowering amidst the darkness of winter, lighting candles in our hearts to lead us toward the sun. In that very darkness we have slowly started to see more light — the sun peeking through the curtains a little earlier, the days sweetly lingering a little longer on the horizon and melting into evening as we call upon spring.

March is the month of the vernal equinox, the month of change and transition as well as healing and growth. The spring equinox is a rebirth from winter and, simultaneously, a sudden but gradual metamorphosis of new life and light as everything pushes through to the surface. This push brings abrupt changes, changes which are like the weather — fierce like lions and timid like lambs. And as we push through with our intentions toward the light, everything that has been beneath the surface begins to bubble up,sometimes churning and shedding layers, and sometimes gently and gratefully.

Like nature, we too must prepare for the change of seasons and the transition into spring, and unfold the blossoms of the seeds we planted in winter. Spring’s volatility sometimes makes us more temperamental as an uneven emotional flow appears: we reflect the changes of the earth and the season. We can achieve a seasonal harmony with spring as we release the heavy effects of winter and lovingly leap into the bright light to reach the reward of breaking through to the other side. Here are a few ways to stay grounded through this change as we celebrate the sun:

1. Eat well — Eat what’s in season and vibrantly colored; feel that vitality energize and stabilize you. Use garlic, onion, herbs and spices liberally i

2. Detoxify the body through energetic movement and breathing — Start your day with a brisk walk or bike ride, put on a happy song and dance, or practice yoga. Feel connected to the rhythm of the earth as you move through Sun Salutations. In addition to sun salutations, I invite you to try Warrior 1 and 2 as well as Lion’s Breath (see details after the article). The warrior poses will energize and empower you as you build a beautiful fire within yourself, burning away impurities on physical and emotional levels as you glow vibrantly. Lion’s Breath empowers us as well as allows us to release tension and surrender to the flow of change, and be carefree and playful like a lamb.n cooking. Drink lots of water and even add lemon to strengthen the digestive fire. Give yourself a mini-cleanse or try to go meat free one day a week. By taking care of what you put into your body, a beautiful bloom will appear on the outside.

3. Clear away the heaviness of stress and tension by releasing stagnant thoughts — Align your mind with the positive renewal and rebirth of nature. Clear away clutter at home and in your personal spaces at work: even the smallest of acts has great impact. Creating physical space around you makes room within you as well as space for new experiences.

4. Connect with nature and celebrate the season — Walk outside, breathe in the air, lie in the grass, listen to the birds sing, and watch the flowers dance in the breeze around you. Imagine yourself as a flower unfolding in the sunshine. Connect with nature’s rhythm and allow it to resonate within you and shine like a diamond.

When we practice these grounding methods, we can get through this time of breaking through the soil and into the light with some ease and playful joy. Always be gentle with yourself and remember to give yourself time to unfurl toward the light: a great garden takes time and sprouts when ready. May your spring bring you much happiness and a beautiful unfolding within and around you. To the radiant flower within you, bloom magnificently!ct with nature and celebrate the season — Walk outside, breathe in the air, lie in the grass, listen to the birds sing, and watch the flowers dance in the breeze around you. Imagine yourself as a flower unfolding in the sunshine. Connect with nature’s rhythm and allow it to resonate within you and shine like a diamond.
