Fatal Beauty-Lead In Lipstick

By Amanda Wilkes:

As I  look at that perfect shade of lipstick and feel it smooth along my lips, I only wish that it was poisoning me. We have removed lead from our paints, our homes and our gasoline, how on earth is it still allowed in our lipstick? It’s time for us to take a stand! Of course we all enjoy a splash of fruity, juicy, or luscious color on our lips, but when we have the option to choose between lead-based and lead-free lipstick the choice is simple. The issue is that many women are unaware of the toxic amount of lead that is present, or that it is present at all. The presence of any lead in any product is dangerous to our health and unacceptable when recognizing its harmful effects. After the FDA silently released its new data on lead in lipsticks during the bustling 2011 holiday season, a campaign for safe cosmetics became active.lipstick

This campaign turned its focus on lead in lipsticks just before Valentines Day this year, terming it “Kiss Lead Goodbye”. The campaign sheds light on the idea about applying lead-filled lipstick every day multiple times a day and how harmful this can be to your body. The recent science indicates there is no safe level of lead exposure. Lead is a neurotoxin and can be dangerous at small doses. It is obvious that no amount of lead is safe, but this much application can lead to things such as learning, language, and behavioral problems. Lead is especially harmful to developing brains…also know as…pregnant women! What surprised me most was the fact that some of the more expensive brands like  L’Oreal and Revlon contained the highest amounts of lead. You would think these companies would be astute enough to recognize, at least from a business perspective, that by putting all these harmful toxins in their products they are terminating the length of time their customers will use their products. lead-in-lipstick

My solution: Buy organic all natural lipsticks that promote their lead-free base! You will still look just as beautiful and your lips will be just as kissable. Maybe you will get even MORE action when you tell your significant other that the lipstick you use comes from all natural ingredients. There are several websites you can look at to determine if the lipstick you are using is lead based, This article provides information about the amount of lead tested in many lipsticks.

If you are too scared to look at the amount of lead you have been applying each and every day, you can begin to think more positively and look at a list like this, that will give you some direction on which lead free lipstick brands are best! Let’s be as beautiful inside as we are out and buy lead-free lipstick. Be a leader for no lead.  Pass it on!
