Of all the ignorant, thoughtless, dangerous and self-serving tweets Donald Trump has posted on Twitter about climate change, this recent one about California’s devastating wildfires just about made my head explode:
Apparently that’s what he actually thinks, that we “divert” all our water to the ocean, and if we just got rid of those pesky environmental laws and clear-cut all our forests, we’d have no more fires! When was the last time you saw a golf course catch fire? I guess he doesn’t understand that rivers work by a thing called gravity —they all tend to run out to the ocean. But understanding gravity runs too close to accepting science.
Here’s another gem:
Instead of letting my blood pressure rise, stewing in impotent rage, drinking heavily, or ignoring the news altogether, here’s a positive, healthier alternative: Plant a Tree for Trump!
The nonprofit group is a tree-planting platform that facilitates people to plant trees for themselves or as gifts. They have created a fun, stress-relieving offshoot campaign to respond to President Trump’s breathtakingly ignorant tweets on climate change: ! With the included mapping and tracking system on the site, one can track “their” tree’s growth over the course of years.
After seeing people overwhelmingly frustrated with climate change deniers, Treepex co-founder, Bacho Khachidze, came up with the idea. “It’s normal to get angry when people with power spread false information about a problem that needs urgent attention, their words can do real damage,” he says. “But we wanted to provide people with something actionable they could do that wasn’t, like, screaming back.”
For each of the Trump tweets available to which one can “treespond,” the site offers a set number of trees that can be planted in the quote’s honor. “Each quote is evaluated with an ignorance scale (specially created for the project),” notes the site. “The more ignorant the phrase is, the more trees must be planted to eliminate the quote.”
All the Trump trees are going directly to national forests in California, which has been, and continues to be, devastated by wildfires. It costs $9.99 to plant each tree; and every tree planted comes with its own certificate with an ID number, location and photo updates of your little arboreal adoptee. The trees are planted in partnership with the . With the help of Treepex, you can choose where you would like the tree planted.
