The world is a giant gymnasium with trees instead of pull-up bars, trails instead of treadmills, and lakes instead of lap pools. The world is the largest, most prestigious, continuously challenging “gym” you will ever work out in! Now, I know that all sounds great, but what is even more wonderful is that it is a “gym” you can join for FREE!
What I dislike most about going to a traditional gym is how quickly boredom sinks in. Even though they so thoughtfully provide TV screens with several channel options and even the choice to virtually feel as if you are running through the woods or along the beach, I still find myself watching the clock and staring at the most fit girl in the gym, three treadmills down, as she runs 10 mph for 45 minutes without breaking a sweat. UGH!
On the flip side, I absolutely love exercising outside! I never get bored of green trees or real woods or a beach that absolutely beats the virtual one the gym has to offer EVERY TIME! I wave at people walking or running by and they wave back at me, which always makes me feel encouraged, rather than intimidated, as I do at the gym, where everyone always keeps to themselves. I usually wear headphones when I am working out, but when I’m outside, the sounds of nature and people’s hellos are even better!
The best part about exercising outside, if you’re like me, is having a great workout partner with me! My workout partner happens to be my two-year-old yellow lab, but, hey… I can’t bring him to any traditional gym! When I work out outside, he is always with me, which means he gets a good workout, too!
Even when you thought it couldn’t get any better, studies have shown that working out outside in the fresh air, with nature as your background, can reduce the levels of stress in your brain. Sounds like the perfect excuse to get outside and get working out!
