Legalize it–The Fight For Raw Milk

By Chef Centehua

No, I’m not talking about hemp or same sex marriage. Today I am talking about a delicious and nutrient rich drink – milk.

Yes, milk is now the big controversy and, like hemp and same sex marriage, raw milk has wonderful benefits to our society but remains illegal for obvious financial interests. The powers-that-be seek even more control over how we live our lives and what we consume, even when doing so harms no one and actually helps many.

So why is raw milk illegal? Raw milk is blamed for ailments such as heart disease, allergies, even cancer. The FDA dairy food regulators are opposed to everyone’s having access to raw milk even though many actually grew up on it. They continue to make farmers into criminals: they aim to suspend the dairy license from every milk club. Now, Georgia, Illinois and  Wisconsin have begun an anti-raw milk campaign. The regulators make exaggerated claims and present statistics on small numbers of people who got sick from raw milk. However, back in the day when everyone had access to real raw dairy products from pastured cows and goats, very few people actually suffered from heart disease, cancer, autism, diabetes, etc.

It seems to me that the issue is about control and power. We live in a country that suppresses and regulates nutrient rich foods but deems genetically modified foods, toxic pesticides and chemicals as safe. It is no coincidence that President Obama appointed Monsanto’s vice president as his senior advisor to the commissioner of the FDA. This man was responsible for changing the FDA’s policy when GMO’s were introduced into our food without undergoing any testing whatsoever to determine their safety.  The reason I mention this is to shed light on how politics and food are deeply intertwined.

We, not the government, should have the right to choose the foods we desire to feed our families. We also should have the right to know what is done to our food by these chemical companies, but the government wishes to keeps us in the dark and continues to regulate beneficial foods such as raw milk. Gratefully, the information is out there for us to educate one another and demand our rights. Raw milk is legal in ten states including California, and all raw milk products must carry a warning label informing consumers that the product potentially contains disease-causing microorganisms.

The truth is that these microorganisms are vital for healthy intestinal flora. In fact, during the last century, raw milk was actually used as a medicine, for we knew that a healthy balance of bacteria is vital for the absorption of nutrients and overall health. The pasteurization of dairy products destroys vitamin B-12, enzymes and other important nutrients. We have seen a rise in neurological disorders, allergies and degenerative diseases since the introduction of GMO’s;  and there is ample evidence that suggests it all can be traced to digestive issues.

Professionals keep telling us that there really is no link between nutrition and our health issues, but I personally find nothing further from the truth, for I have experienced the healing effects of raw milk and other fermented products high in probiotics. I slowly have been healing my gut after years of being a vegan and suffering from digestive issues and acne. I am so grateful to live in a state where I have easy access to this amazing and complete food. I know my entire family is benefiting greatly, and my kids have not seen a doctor in years. Raw milk is a staple in my diet, and I will continue to promote the legalization of this ancient and incredible food.

Please note that, in order to gain benefits from raw dairy, the cows or goats must be healthy and free to roam green pastures, as seasonal grasses are their natural diet. I have found that one of the best ways to fight factory farming is to support organic farmers who treat their livestock humanely and help rebuild our top soil, which is very important for the health of our planet and future generations. There are many things we can do when we realize how powerful we are together. You can ask your local store to carry raw dairy, and also sign petitions and educate others on the importance of quality, clean food. Every day we vote with our dollars: the food we consume determines our health and that of our environment.

I encourage everyone to do the research instead of believe propaganda, and to take a stand for real freedom and truth. Are we really free when others decide what we are to eat?  What are your thoughts?

Raw dessert = pure nutrition

By Fredrica Syren: On Sunday evenings I make dessert for my family.  My kids do not …

  1. Thanks so much for posting this! I can not tell all the benefits that raw milk has done for our family. I couldn’t drink milk before…but raw milk. Bring it on! My son just went back to the dentist after having caveties and he had a perfect bill of health! My autoimmune issues are suppressed when I drink it. I can make cheese, and yoghurt and lacto fermented foods. It’s just AMAZING! <3

  2. I think that there are lots of benefits today about raw milk, but I have to give a word of caution to people, because I grew up on a dairy farm in Switzerland and know how clean the cow and the farm have to be in order to drink raw milk. My dad contracted Bang’s disease(Brucellosis) from raw unpasteurized cow’s milk in the 1950’s (yes, it was a long time ago :-)) and then became a dairy farmer. That disease almost took his life, until they found a very expensive vaccine from Holland that saved his life. The word of caution that I would like to bring up is that you need to buy raw milk from only farmers who practice safe habits when extracting the milk. Straus Family Creamery is definitely a good source and I personally trust them. I also agree with the great benefits of unpasteurized milk, but my mother never let that milk go past 1 day, without eventually heating it up. She used to make us yogurt with it and I do have to say that we were almost never sick as kids, because we had the freshest and best milk and dairy products in town. This is overall a good article, just wanted to share my thoughts as a dairy farmer’s daughter :-).
