Just Like Groupon…But For A Cause

By Amanda Wilkes

Do you love your daily Groupon deals? I know I  do. In fact, it is one of my favorite e-mails of the day. Discovering what special deal they have to offer, whether a trip to Mexico, an exfoliating facial, or half-off yoga classes, I am a budget guru!  I am so excited to tell you about my encounter last weekend at the Farmers Market! As I sat down amidst music and friends to indulge in my exquisite Mediterranean crepe that had just been prepared for me, a man with a clipboard in hand tapped my shoulder. Interrupted and annoyed,  convinced that he just wanted me to sign another homeless rights petition that I had already signed four or five times, I gave him a “what’s-so-damned-important” look. He began to tell me about his cause and of course I went into somewhat of a twilight zone as I pretended to listen. As soon as I heard “similar to groupon,” though, my ears perked up and I started to listen. By the end of our conversation, I was signing that clipboard I had thought was so invasive just a few minutes prior. As soon as I got home, I checked out the program he had told me about. I love it.

The program is called Ideal4acause and its motto is “making a difference one deal at a time.” They are very similar to the ever-popular Groupon, but ideal4acause donates 10-20% of each sale to an organization or charity.  It’s as easy as going to their website ideal4acause.com, finding local deals that are discounted 50-80%, printing a voucher at home, using it as early as the next day, and then feeling good that you are supporting local businesses and community as well as local charities. If you want to know exactly which charity will receive the portion of your sale, the featured charity is located below the deal of the day. You can receive daily deal e-mails by subscribing at the top left corner of their website with your e-mail and zip code. What I love most about these kinds of sites is that they give me great ideas about how I can fully enjoy the beautiful city where I live, doing things that I  never would have thought of. What I love most about this particular site is that I am supporting local causes. In fact, I just bought today’s deal, which is $20 for Admission & Rentals for 4 at San Diego Ice Arena ($48 value). I am excited about ideal4acause, and maybe next time someone approaches me with a clipboard, even when I am about to indulge in my tasty crepe, I really will listen to what they have to say!
