Hooping for Health and Fun

By Wendy Fleet

Remember back in the day, when you would spin and twirl in circles without a care until you were very dizzy, and then do it again? I remember doing that a lot as a kid, and then I remember at age 12 getting my first hula hoop — spinning took a more creative form. Recently I have rediscovered the simplicity of this circular object and the endless possibilities of movement. I bought a couple on line, and now I have been making some, too. They are easy to make and so much fun to play with. I made a couple small hoops for my girls and a few larger ones for taller friends and family.

Every evening my 10-year-old daughter Eva and I hoop together until we are exhausted and exhilarated. Exercise should be fun and, well, this timeless toy has taken a new spin. Dancing with a hoop provides the opportunity to explore the space around you and unleash your creativity. It is also a form of meditation, bringing you into the moment, as if you were dancing in the center of a whirlwind where time stops and you can let go into the rotation of the world.

Everything is spinning. We are living inside a vortex that makes our planet move about in a circular motion, producing energy. So in a way hooping has tuned me in to the universal flow and, as I lose myself into the spin, I release the playful child I really am inside. Naturally my children find this practice fun and it makes perfect sense to them to play together. The benefits are of personal, emotional and physical transformation. Very much like other forms of mind/body/spirit practices, hooping gets me into a place of acceptance, and feelings of health and well being. When we play together with family and friends, we acknowledge our connection and share in this ecstatic trance. Hooping is perfect for busy moms or anyone on a budget who wants to exercise and feel good. All you need is a little room, music, and your hoop.  The best part is that you also can take it with you anywhere. Who knows whom you will inspire!
