How many body and skincare products do you use in a day? We have shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, shaving cream, body lotion, face moisturizer, toothpaste, deodorant, makeup –the list goes on! The point is this: we slather on a lot of creams and soaps every day, adding up to a lot of ingredients that are absorbed into our skin and into our bodies. Just like the food we eat, the body products we use should also be safe, healthy, and sustainable.
Personally, I am slightly neurotic about my daily skin and body care regimen. I have a set routine for morning and night — rinse face, brush teeth, apply sunscreen; then at night — rinse face, floss, brush teeth, use mouth wash, apply moisturizer. If I miss a step one day, I feel incomplete. It’s ridiculous! But, I don’t think I’m the only one like this. These products become part of our daily routines, and it’s important that they won’t become harmful to our health or the environment over time.
I have listed a few of my favorite body and skin care products that I use everyday or very often.
ECO-DENT Daily Care Toothpowder — This is an all natural toothpowder made mainly from baking soda, calcium carbonate, and magnesium carbonate. It contains no dyes or sweeteners, and is not tested on animals. It comes in a little plastic bottle and, considering it lasts a long time, usually is sold at a reasonable price. I just apply a small amount to a wet toothbrush and it cleans my teeth without mysterious chemicals.
Tom’s Deodorant — This deodorant uses potassium alum, a naturally occurring form of aluminum salt, which absorbs moisture instead of clogging sweat ducts, as aluminum chlorohydrate products do. (Aluminum chlorohydrate is also a potential carcinogen.) I like Tom’s deodorant because it consists of only a few ingredients, which are all natural, and the mild fragrance keeps me smelling fresh.
EarthScience Almond-Aloe Moisturizer — I use this moisturizer everyday. I like it because it includes SPF 15, it is not tested on animals, and it contains no parabens (known hormone-disruptors). Aside from aloe and almond, it also is comprised of ingredients like green tea leaf extract and ginseng. Unlike most face lotions, EarthScience moisturizer is very light and doesn’t irritate my skin.
Tea Tree Oil — I use any brand of tea tree oil that is 100% pure Australian oil. Tea tree oil is a must-have natural antiseptic that has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. I use it for skin blemishes, cuts and scrapes. It’s also a great ingredient for making homemade deodorant.
Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap — Not only do I love Dr. Bronner’s products, but the company itself is committed to ethical and sustainable business practices, and they support activist work such as the Label GMOs campaign. Their bottles are made from 100% post-consumer plastic, and their ingredients are all fair trade, organic, and biodegradable. The castile soaps are supposed to have 18 uses all in one, from toothpaste to deodorant to aftershave, but I use it only as body wash and shampoo. The one in the dark blue bottle is my favorite because it’s made with peppermint oil and gives off a cool, tingly sensation that leaves me feeling extra fresh.
