Dying from Hair Dye?

By Amanda Wilkes

Death may not be the first symptom to come knocking at your door, but after years and years of toxic exposure, the many health issues associated with hair dye are not surprising! If you are anything like me, you get highlights every six months or so; but if you’re someone like my mother, then you get your hair done every 6 weeks. Obviously, the more often you get your hair colored, the more likely you are to develop health problems from these products. With over 50 million women in the U.S. alone dying their hair each year, I believe this is an issue that we definitely should be concerned about. With this many women, we have the potential to make a strong stand against the hair products we are being offered, so why aren’t we doing this?  I had never really thought about issues like these before. Like many other women, I bought popular beauty products and enjoyed the luxuries of the salon, but now that I have begun my investigation, there seems to be an endless list of toxins and chemicals in these products that I do not approve of.

Hair dye is made up of many ingredients, but some that were shocking include para-phenylenediamine, which can cause the scalp to burn and severe headaches; coal tar, which can cause allergic reactions; lead acetate, which is a potential carcinogen, has been banned from Europe, and is known to cause neurological problems; DMDM hydantoin, which is linked to immune deficiencies; and last but not least, ammonia, which causes respiratory problems. If I think we have it bad being the clients, imagine how unsafe those products are for the hair stylists. In a study by the Research Group for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, it was proven that female hairdressers have a higher risk for INFERTILITY and SPONTANEOUS ABORTIONS due to their chemical exposure. Read more on the study by clicking here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19092492.  As for me, I think I will skip any products causing any of these disturbing problems. The good news is that I don’t have to become the “mousy brown blonde” when avoiding these toxic chemicals because, like most things, there are ALTERNATIVES!

If you dare do your own hair….
