With cooler weather comes dry skin so I make lotion bars to keep my skin soft.  Lotion bars also makes natural personal gifts for all occasions.  You can make them unscented or add essentials oils for nice smells or even add dried flowers to make them really pretty. Shaped like a heart, they are well suited for Valentine’s Day. A flower mold is ideal on Mother’s Day.

Not only does making your own lotion bars save you money, but also they are easy to pop into your purse; and they are easier to use than bottled lotions.

The method of heating and mixing is basically the same for all bars. Taken from an online link, this popular recipe is one you might like to try.

Easy Lotion Bars Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 6 Tbsp Cocoa Butter
  • 1 Tbsp Shea Butter
  • 1 Tbsp almond oil
  • 1 Tsp vitamin E oil (optional)
  • 5 drops of essential oil like Joy, Lavender, Citrus or chamomile  (optional)

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients (except essential oils if using) in a double
boiler or a glass bowl over a smaller saucepan with 1 inch of water in
it.  For a low maintenance approach, combine ingredients in a
quart-size glass mason jar, then place jar into a small saucepan of water
until melted. This will save your bowl because you can designate this
jar just for this type of project and not even need to wash it out!

Turn the burner on and bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients
constantly until they are melted and smooth.

Remove from heat, let cool a bit, then add any desired essential oils
and/or vitamin E. Gently stir by hand until essential oils are incorporated.

Carefully pour into molds or whatever you will be allowing the lotion bars to harden in . I used silicone baking cups for easy removal,
though any mold would work. Allow the lotion bars to cool completely
before attempting to pop them out of the molds.
